Brief Description Of Brushless Motors
The Brushless DC Electric Motor (BLDC) is an electric motor that relies on electronic commutation with a direct current voltage source. Despite conventional DC motors governing the industry for an extended period, BLDC motors have gained wider prominence in recent times. It emanated from the emergence of semiconductor electronics in the 1960s, which facilitates their development.
What is Dc Power?
Electrical current is the movement of electrons through a conductor, such as a wire.
There are two types of current:
Alternating current (AC)
Direct current (DC)
AC current is produced by a generator. It is characterized by electrons periodically changing direction in the conductor, caused by the alternator or rotating magnet.
In contrast, DC current's electron flow travels in one direction. It is sourced from either a battery or a power supply connected to an AC line.
Similarities Bldc And Dc Motors
BLDC and DC motors share many similarities. Both types comprise a stationary stator that holds either permanent magnets or electromagnets on its outer side and a rotor with coil windings inside, driven by direct current. Once supplied with direct current, the stator's magnetic field is activated, causing rotor magnets to move, enabling the rotor to turn. A commutator is necessary to maintain continuous rotation of the rotor, as it prevents alignment with the stator's magnetic force. The commutator continually switches the current through the windings, changing the magnetic and allowing the rotor to keep spinning as long as the motor is powered.
Differences Bldc And Dc Motors
A key distinction between BLDC and DC motors lies in their commutator design. A DC motor uses carbon brushes for this purpose. A disadvantage of these brushes is that they wear quickly. BLDC motors utilize sensors, typically Hall sensors, to measure the position of the rotor and a circuit board that functions as a switch.
Conclusion
Brushless motors are rapidly gaining popularity and they can now be found in almost every aspect of our lives from residential to industrial applications. These motors impress us with their compactness, efficiency and reliability.
