What motor makes a phone vibrate?

The mobile phone industry is a vast market, and vibration motors have become a standard component. Nearly every device now has the ability to generate vibration alerts, and the field of tactile feedback is growing rapidly. The original application of mobile phone vibration motors in pagers to provide vibration reminders. As cell phones replaced pagers, the technology behind cell phone vibration motors also changed significantly.

Cylindrical Motor & Coin Vibration Motor

The original use of mobile phone was cylindrical motor, which produced vibrations through the eccentric rotating mass of the motor. Later, it devolved into a ERM coin vibration motor, whose vibration principle is as same as cylindrical motor, but the eccentric rotating mass is inside the metal capsule. Both types operate on the ERM, XY axis vibration principle.

ERM coin vibration motor and cylindrical motor are known for their low price, easy to use, can be made as lead wired types, spring contract type, PCB through type and so on. However, they have short life, weak vibration force, slow response and break time, which are all shortcomings of ERM-type products.

1. X-Y Axis – ERM Cylindrical Shape

Model: ERM – eccentric rotating mass vibrating motors

Type: Pager Motors, Cylindrical Vibrators

Description: High Efficiency, Cheap Price

2. X-Y Axis – ERM Pancake/Coin Shape Vibration Motor

Model: ERM – Eccentric Rotating Mass Vibration Motor

Application: Pager Motors, Phone Vibration Motor

Description: High Efficiency, Cheap Price, Compact To Use

Linear Resonance Actuator (LRA Motor)

Smart experts have developed an alternative type of vibrotactile feedback to provide an enhanced experience. This innovation is called LRA (Linear Resonance Actuator) or Linear Vibration Motor. The physical shape of this vibration motor is similar to the previously mentioned coin vibration motor, and it has the same connection method. But the main difference lies in its internals and how it's driven. The LRA consists of a spring attached to a mass and is driven by an AC pulse, causing the mass to move up and down in the direction of the spring. LRA operates at a specific frequency, usually between 205Hz and 235Hz, and the vibration is strongest when the resonant frequency is reached.

3. Z – Axis – Coin Type Linear Resonant Actuator

Type: Linear Resonant Actuator (LRA Motor)

Application: Cell Phone Vibration Motor

Features: Long Lifetime, Fast Response, Precision Haptic

The linear vibration motor acts as a Z-direction vibrator, providing more direct feedback through finger touch than traditional ERM flact vibration motors. In addition, the feedback of the linear vibration motor is more immediate, with a starting speed of about 30ms, bringing a pleasant experience to all the senses of the phone. This makes it ideal for use as a vibration motor in mobile phones.
